Brookstone opened the season on a hot and muggy August night with a hard-fought 49-32 victory over Jordan, at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium. Sophomore RB/DB Jeremiah Burgess tallied the first two touchdowns of the game. The first on offense with a 14 yard scamper off of an option pitch from Russell Blanchard. Freshman Clark Smith added the P.A.T. Burgess’s second score came on the ensuing defensive turn with an 85 yard interception return. The extra point try was blocked.

Jordan score once in the first quarter on a 20 yard pass from Daren Lewis to DeAndre Snead. And they scored first in the second period with a 42 yard pass play by the same duo.

With Jordan leading 14-13, Brookstone mounted a 5 minute, 14 play drive in which the Cougars dominated in the trenches. Russell Blanchard scored on a 5 yard run to end that drive and Walker Cottrell added a two point conversion to leave the score 21-14 at intermission.

To open the second half, Cottrell plunged across the goal line from one yard out after a bad snap from center sailed over the Jordan QB’s head and was recovered by the Cougars on the one yard line. Cottrell scored the next touchdown on a 2 yard run. Smith tacked on the point-after on both TD’s. Jordan’s Arron Maxwell scored on a 7 yard run in third and their 2 point try failed. The score after three periods was Brookstone 35, Jordan 20.

Early in 4th quarter, Jordan was forced to punt from their own 18, the center snap flew over the punter’s head and was recovered in the end zone by Cougar lineman Jack Peek. With Smith’s extra point the Cougars were up 42-20. But the action was far from over.

Twenty seconds after their punt miscue, Jordan QB, Lewis hit Levi Meadows for a 55 yard passing TD. Then the Red Jacket defense stiffened, forcing the Cougars to punt and Jordan’s offense scored again on a 30 yard run by Lewis.

With the score 42-32 Cougar fullback Josh Long delivered a much needed break-away run up the middle putting Brookstone on the 5 yard line where Blanchard would finish the night with an uncontested option run around left end to leave the final score at 49-32.

Brookstone has a bye this week and will play First Presbyterian Day on September 2nd.

Congrats to the Cougars for this incredible win! And a special congratulations to sophomore Jeremiah Burgess! His interception and ensuing touchdown was nominated for WTVM Play of the Week!
