Agricolga Wins Local Grant
For the past two years, Brookstone’s Agri-Colga Club, which manages the vegetable gardens outside our cafeteria, has been going to Fox Elementary School every Tuesday after school to develop an on-campus garden. Working together with the same group of 4th and 5th graders, the students have built six raised beds at Fox and have implemented planting and harvest plans, teaching the students how to plant and grow their own vegetables.
Recently, the WC Bradley Company and Columbus Food Oasis (the local chapter of Georgia Organics which promotes healthy, local food for our community) invited several local groups to pitch community gardening projects for a cash prize and Agri-Colga jumped at the chance.
Under the leadership of Lillie Norred, Blake Schoonover, Drea’ Singleton, along with their advisor Mrs. Cynthia Lingo, the group pitched their project … and WON! They won a $1,500 grant!
The money will be used both to expand the campus garden into a 20×50 area designed to hold four additional raised beds and to enhance the depth of the program at Fox.
We are so proud of our students and the work they have put into this project! Congratulations to all involved!
