A few years ago, Uma Alappan had a goal; to begin a girls golf team at Brookstone High School. It wasn’t easy.

“People were trying to discourage me and telling me to play volleyball or soccer to get credits to graduate but I invested so much time since I was 9 years old that I wanted to play,” Alappan said. “So it was just me and I got two of my friends to join to make it three”

It only grew from there as thirty girls tried out this season.

Alappan is now a junior and a captain. Seeing her hope come to fruition is pretty sweet.

“It’s really, really cool to have this experience and this year we’re trying to win for state,” she said.

Golf isn’t her only passion though. At the end of the year, she’ll hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Indian dance.

“I’ve been doing it since I was really little, like 3 or 4 years old,” Alappan said. “So it’s really cool to develop my talent over time and get a reward for it.”

After high school, Alappan hopes to follow in her parent’s footsteps and earn a medical degree from Yale.

With a 4.7 GPA, she’s on her way there. But while she knows academics mean a lot when it comes to applying for college, she credits her involvement to something else.

“I do it because it s fun,” she said. “I enjoy singing, I enjoy piano, golf, everything I do.”
